ASTM Standards for Direct Push and Monitoring Wells: A Practical Guide

Environmental drilling follows field practice, local regulation and a set of widely used technical standards. ASTM publishes several of the guides and practices most cited in direct push sampling, hollow stem auger drilling and monitoring well installation. This article presents the main ones and what they mean when you choose a drill rig. ASTM documents are voluntary consensus standards, so always check the current edition and the rules that apply in your country.
The standards most cited in the field
Standard | Subject | Why it matters |
ASTM D6282 | Direct push soil sampling for environmental site characterization | Guides soil sampling with liners and samplers |
ASTM D6001 | Direct push groundwater sampling for environmental site characterization | Guides groundwater sampling during investigation |
ASTM D5784 | Hollow-stem augers for geoenvironmental exploration and installation of monitoring devices | Guides HSA drilling and well installation |
ASTM D5092 | Design and installation of groundwater monitoring wells | Guides well design, materials and completion |
Direct push standards
Direct push soil and groundwater sampling guides describe how to drive the tools, collect samples and avoid cross-contamination. For a buyer, the practical consequences are tooling compatibility (liners, samplers and rods that follow common standards), enough driving force for your soils and a rig that can work at the depths your projects demand.
Hollow stem auger and monitoring well standards
Hollow-stem auger guidance covers how to keep the borehole open while sampling and installing wells. Well design practice covers casing, screen, filter pack, seal and grout. Here the rig matters because the auger diameter limits the well diameter, and the stability of the borehole affects well quality.
What this means when you choose a rig
Tooling: prefer tools that follow common standards, so you can source replacements easily.
Both methods: a rig that does direct push and hollow stem auger covers sampling and well construction in the same job.
Depth and diameter: check the real depth of each method and the maximum auger diameter on the datasheet.
Documentation: ask the manufacturer for manuals and technical data you can attach to your own procedures.
A rig for both approaches
The SAM 400, from Diamond Drill, does direct push up to 40 m and hollow stem auger (7.1/2" x 4") up to 40 m, with an 89 CV diesel engine, 3,950 kg and a remote control included. See the SAM 400 page or talk to our technical team.
