CE Marking for Drilling Rigs: Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the New Machinery Regulation

To sell a drilling rig in the European Union, the machine must carry the CE marking. For buyers, it is a sign that the manufacturer has assessed the machine against the applicable health and safety requirements. For manufacturers, it is a process with documents, tests and responsibilities.
What CE marking means
CE marking shows that the manufacturer declares the machine meets the applicable EU requirements. It is not a quality seal issued by a third party in most cases: the manufacturer takes responsibility.
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
Drilling rigs are machinery. The Machinery Directive sets essential health and safety requirements that the manufacturer must meet and document.
The new Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230
The Machinery Regulation replaces the Directive and applies from 20 January 2027. Manufacturers should plan the transition, including requirements related to digital documentation and certain new safety aspects. Check the official text and your notified body or consultant for details.
What the process typically includes
Risk assessment of the machine (a common reference is ISO 12100).
Design and safety measures that address the risks identified.
Technical file with drawings, calculations, test results and manuals.
Instructions for use and maintenance in the language of the country of use.
EU Declaration of Conformity.
CE marking on the machine and identification of the manufacturer.
What buyers should ask the supplier
The EU Declaration of Conformity for the exact model.
Manuals in the local language.
Who is the manufacturer or authorized representative in the EU.
Spare parts and service support in Europe.
